FOOD IN BRIEF: Industrial Hub restaurateurs hold up their End with new eatery

Union Bar and Grill is scheduled to open today at 1357 Washington St., adding yet another dining destination to this up-and-coming section of the South End. Partners Seth Woods, Matthew Burns and Jeff Gates, known as the Aquitaine Group, have renovated a warehouse, leaving exposed beams and bricks, adding wrought-iron accents and industrial-style windows.

With a wood grill and a smoker, the kitchen turns New England ingredients into contemporary American fare. The inaugural menu from executive chef Woods and chef de cuisine Steven Sherman offers seared king salmon filled with sweet corn, chanterelles, lima beans and bacon vinaigrette; grilled poussin with andouille cornbread stuffing; and steamed mussels with smoked tomatoes, shallots and fresh thyme. Buttermilk cornbread is served in cast-iron skillets. A bar menu offers burgers, pastas and appetizers for $6 to $7.

Union Bar and Grill is the fifth restaurant from this steadily expanding group, which also owns Aquitaine, Aquitaine Bis, the Armani Cafe and Metropolis. Could Union be a prototype? Woods says for now, the focus is to have a successful launch. Call 617-423-0555.
