Another NU Success Story-
Jeffrey Gates - Part Owner, Union Bar and Grille. Partner, Aquitaine Group

Jeff Gates is part owner of the Union Bar and Grille, a new restaurant in Boston's South End serving contemporary American cuisine. A 23-year veteran of the restaurant business, Gates is also a partner in the Aquitaine Group, which oversees such popular Boston eateries as Aquitaine, Metropolis Cafe and Armani Cafe.

Favorite NU memory: Having the city of Boston as my campus. After five years at Northeastern, I was a Bostonian. I also shared a special bond with my classmates. Northeastern students possess a unique desire to achieve and make something their own.

Favorite courses: Calculus and Structural Analysis

Favorite co-op: Barry Controls in Watertown, Mass., which manufactured bearings for military and civilian helicopters. My role was to analyze the effect of energy and environmental forces on the lifetime of these bearings.

Best part of a Northeastern education: Co-op, hands-down. You simply canÕt receive this kind of knowledge in a classroom. Co-op shows you not only what you want to do, but what you might not want to do.

How NU prepared him for his job: There's a direct correlation between my engineering degree and what I do. In the field of entertainment, you have customers, employees, the products, and the recipes. Like in engineering, a successful manager has to juggle all of these variables and create an equation that works. Northeastern is 100 percent behind where I am today.

Staying connected to NU: I live in the South End, so I'm close by. I occasionally rollerblade through campus and work out at the Marino Center. I am amazed with how Northeastern has changed over the years. I stay in touch with many of my friends from Northeastern and read the university magazine each issue.
